Bong Joon Ho together with “Snowpiercer” delivers a solid adaptation of the famous cult comic book released in 1984. And managed to impose himself on the then producer, Harvey Weinstein, who wanted to happily kill the editing of his film …
Are you familiar with Snowpiercer? Bong Joon-ho movie with Chris Evans (Captain America) adapted from the comics Transparency Hosted by Jacques Lobby and Jean-Marc Rochette tonight on Arte. This happens in 2031, on an ice-covered earth. The last survivors boarded a Snowpiercer, a giant train that is doomed to bypass the Earth without stopping. In this futuristic metal microcosm, which divides the ice, a hierarchy of classes has been re-created, against which a man trained by one of them is trying to fight …
Post-production from hell …
However, Snowpiercer’s post-production was hell, as the Korean director revealed to the site. VulnerabilityBecause at the time the film distributor in the United States, Harvey Weinstein, wanted to cut the feature film by at least 25 minutes, or from 126 to 101 minutes.
The desire to cut the now-defunct producer, nicknamed “Harvey Scissors with Fingers,” also sparked strong outrage from Tilda Swinton, who came in 2013 to present the film at the Deauville American Film Festival.
In the eyes of the founder of Miramax: the dialogues he wanted to remove completely, then the characters remove all motivation and inconsistency of the film. Bong Joon-hom recalled his discussion with Weinstein:
It was a doomed meeting. I’m the one who has always been a part of the director of his films before. I have never done an installation that I did not want. Weinstein’s nickname is “Harvey Scissors” and he was very proud of editing the film.
Bong Jun-ho especially remembered the problem on stage that Weinstein wanted to remove. In it, Chris Evans, Jamie Bell and their allies confront hooded fighters equipped with personal weapons. In this sequence one of the hooded axes opens the fish.
“Why fish? We want to act!”, To which Bong Jun-ho replies: “My father was a fisherman, I dedicate this plan to my father.” Weinstein is touched and bows … but Bong lied, his father had never been a fisherman! And here’s how the lie saved the shot that became the cult of the movie.
But “Fish scene“It was resolved, Weinstein did not miss the film for all this, tried to charge for its editing. He decided to test the distributor version (i.e. amputation for 25 minutes) in front of the audience.
If Weinstein insisted on retaining his version, Bong was ready to remove his name from the credits. But in the end, the distributor agreed to keep editing Bong Jun-ho, but decided to release the film not more extensively, but more confidentially.
The philosopher, a Korean director concluded: “For Weinstein it was probably a punishment for a director who did not want to hear it, but for my part everyone was happy. We had our director cut!”
