Dressing up as Ghostface has been a Halloween staple for years, and it’s still quite common to see someone wearing a black cape and white mask with sunken eyes and a screaming mouth around October. However, in March…
We’re 4 days away from the release of Scream VI, and over the past few days, the acclaimed slasher franchise from writer Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven has been spotted in various cities across America, including Sonoma (the fictional town of Woodsboro), New Orleans, and St. Given the state of the world and these sightings of evil clowns in 2016, it’s no wonder that the seemingly random presence of a costumed killer prompted locals to call 911!
But as Variety and Slashfilm report: It’s just marketing! Paramount Pictures has developed a viral campaign that scares people enough to call for help. The Sonoma Police Department in California said it received multiple calls to 911 early Monday morning about a man wearing the iconic costume standing in the street looking creepy.
This person was contacted and hired by the company Paramount to promote the new Scream movie.
We read about it on the Facebook page of the city police.
Meanwhile, the New York Post reported that NBC Bay Area obtained video of the incident, which shows the character staring at anyone crossing the intersection.
While Paramount Pictures declined to comment, the official Ghostface Twitter account got in on the fun, responding:I was just going about my business“and”I’m looking at you” amid the harrowing photos from webcams that captured his journey across the country.

Not for the first time
Paramount pulled a similar stunt with Smile, creating a viral marketing campaign to promote the psychological horror film. Prior to the theatrical release, the studio hired actors to smile annoyingly during televised MLB games. Smile became a surprise hit at the box office, grossing over $200 million worldwide.

Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere and Courteney Cox return for this new installment, which follows the residents of Woodsboro, who are constantly being targeted this time in New York, where they are being hunted by the new Ghostface killer.
See you this Wednesday, March 8, 2023 to discover Scream VI in theaters!
