Nostalgia: why do video games look so much into the past?

During the exploration, the most attentive players will be able to notice some secrets left by those who consider themselves truly fans of the most famous wizard in pop culture. Check out some details that may have gone unnoticed in your adventures!

Hagrid’s grave

Hagrid's grave at the Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy takes place years before the events of Harry Potter, but that hasn’t stopped the developers from inserting some references to the characters (and actors) who have played in the films.

When you travel to the southern exit on your map, you’ll notice a path that leads to a small, familiar hut. Fans of the films will realize that this was Hagrid’s cabin, where Harry, Ron and Hermione spent much of their time when they needed a shoulder to lean on during their adventures.

Of course, in the context of the game, Hagrid is nowhere to be found in the cabin – after all, he wasn’t even born. But, going to the back of the building, you will notice a small tombstone with a drawing of a hippogriff. Fans speculate that this gravestone is a tribute by Hogwarts Legacy staff to Robbie Coltrane, the Hagrid actor who died in October 2022.

Fantastic beasts (and where to find them)

Niffler from Fantastic Beasts is in Hogwarts Legacy

Apart from being able to attend classes to learn potions and spells, the player can also collect amazing pets scattered across the game world. Using a special area in the Room of Requirement, these creatures can be summoned so that they can provide rare items in exchange for affection and food.

The game offers a good variety of animals to collect, but one that any Harry Potter fan will recognize is the Niffler, a kind of furry duck who loves to steal shiny objects. This same animal is one of the pets of Newt Scamander, star of the film series that serves as a prequel to Harry Potter.

Passage of the one-eyed witch

The one-eyed witch statue at Hogwarts Legacy has a secret book passage

In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter is frustrated to learn that he cannot travel to Hogsmeade with his friends due to a lack of permission from his parents (or responsible guardian). While trying to join the tour using his invisibility cloak, brothers Fred and George intercept Harry, presenting the Marauder’s Map to the young wizard. This map allowed Harry to see different routes around the castle, including the location of all the wizards.

Fred reveals to Harry that he can get to Hogsmeade using a secret passage hidden behind the statue of the one-eyed witch, who also appears in the game through a side quest. In the mission, the player must infiltrate the “Honeydukes” shop in Hogsmeade to obtain forbidden sweets, thus discovering the same passageway that Harry would one day use.

Polyjuice potion in the bathroom

The game recalls the famous episode of Hermione preparing potions in the bathroom

Entering the ladies’ room near Professor Fig’s classroom, open the last available door to find a cauldron with a green potion being stirred. This is a reference to the polyjuice potion Hermione invents in the Chamber of Secrets, where the trio try to spy on the Slytherin dormitory for answers about the Basilisk’s attacks.

Entrance to the Chamber of Secrets

The entrance to the Chamber of Secrets is present, but cannot be passed through.

Yes, the entrance to the secret chamber built by Salazar Slytherin exists in Hogwarts Legacy, but it’s impossible to enter (yet). You can find the entrance inside the Slytherin girls’ bathroom, and the most curious thing is that you can see a drawing of a small snake on one of the taps, just like in the movies!

Unfortunately, to enter the chamber, someone has to say “Open” in Parseltongue, and the protagonist of Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t know how to do it. Who knows in some DLC in the future?

Goblet of Fire

Hogwarts Legacy could not miss the famous Goblet of Fire

The Goblet of Fire is a magical item responsible for selecting three wizards who would fight for glory in the Triwizard Tournament. Due to Voldemort’s plan, Harry’s name was thrown into the goblet, who was forced to participate in three deadly challenges that led to the death of Cedric Diggory.

In Hogwarts Legacy, the Goblet of Fire can be found in a corner of the Trophy Room, located at the top of the Hogwarts Grand Staircase. While there is no Triwizard Tournament in the game, it’s quite nice to see that this magical item is stored away in some corner of the castle, waiting to be of use again.

Painting by Richard Harris

The game pays homage to the actor who played Dumbledore

Richard Harris was the first actor to play the role of Dumbledore, but died after filming Chamber of Secrets due to Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The role of Dumbledore went to Michael Gambon, who remained in character until the final film. In the game, inside the Ravenclaw Tower, the developers decided to pay homage to the actor, placing him in one of the living paintings that hang throughout the castle.

Deathly Hallows

The Deathly Hallows are in the game, in a completely stylized mission

Many have wondered if the Deathly Hallows would feature in Hogwarts Legacy, and the answer is yes. During the main quest, the player has to complete different challenges left by the wizards hundreds of years ago. In one of these challenges, the player must find the three mortal relics, important items that led to the final war against Lord Voldemort.

The quest is completely stylized in black and white, telling the story of the three brothers narrated by Hermione in the seventh film, and sets the player the simple goal of escaping death by using relics.

These were just a few secrets available in the world of Hogwarts Legacy. With a map as big as this game’s, I’m sure there’s more to discover. Just keep your eyes peeled and pay close attention to the little details that stand out.

Hogwarts Legacy is available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game will receive versions for PS4, Switch and Xbox One in the future.
