Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison criticized manager Antonio Conte following Wednesday’s Champions League round of 16 exit, questioning the Italian’s decision to put him on the bench.
Tottenham were knocked out of Europe’s top club competition by AC Milan after failing to score in both matches. The Italian club advanced 1-0 on aggregate.
Richarlison, signed by Tottenham on a contract worth £60 million ($71.21 million), earned almost no playing time under Conte and only played the last 20 minutes against Milan in a 0-0 draw in home.
“I didn’t understand… I was doing well, on a good run, two wins against West Ham and Chelsea. Suddenly he put me on the bench, against Wolverhampton he put me on for five minutes. I asked why, they didn’t tell me anything “, Richarlison told TNT Sports Brasil.
“(Tuesday) they asked me to do a test in the gym, that if I was good I would go to the match and, at the time of the match, they left me on the bench. These are things you can’t understand. Let’s see what he will talk about tomorrow, but Here too there are no fools, I’m a professional, I work every day and I want to play. There are minutes left, time.”
Richarlison has scored three goals for Brazil at the World Cup but has only scored two for Tottenham this season and the 25-year-old is yet to open his tally for the club in the Premier League, where they are fourth.
He lamented Tottenham’s lackluster attack against Milan and elimination, leaving the club with nothing to play for this season but securing a top four finish.
“This season, pardon the word, has been shit,” Richarlison said, adding that his aim now is to break into the starting XI when Tottenham host Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
