The Office: After 10 years, Steve Carell explains why he left the series

Steve Carell has explained, 10 years later, why he left the popular series The office. He played Michael Scott, a bumbling boss who had his share of brilliant moments but was often remembered for his comedic missteps. Michael was instrumental in the success of the show, thanks to what Carell added by virtue of portraying him, and his absence was felt when the character departed in season seven.

During an interview on the Office Ladies podcast, Carell told hosts and former Office co-stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey about why she left the show.

Carell felt it was time for the other characters in the series to step into the spotlight and put their stories in the spotlight. In the quote below, the actor discusses the impact with which the farewell episodes were structured, both on and off screen.

“It was time for more characters to step up and more stories to follow. I think it was the right time… the right time I think for everyone but at the same time there is just a sense of joy for me that we got to experience all of this and we were having… I was having the chance to get out with all. And the way these last two episodes have been structured, it has been very rich for me to greet Michael and us as friends at the same time in this moment of working together. But yeah, it was a very, very emotional thing.

The office handled Michael Scott’s departure cleverly, making his absence somewhat central to the stories that surfaced afterward. Subsequent episodes have placed a particular focus on Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) as he tries to rise to the role of regional manager. He also highlighted the memorable Robert California (James Spader), the CEO of the printing company that owns Dunder Mifflin.

When Carell left, The office it was already drawing to a close. The series would only last two more seasons, which were largely seen as unrepresentative of comedy’s best work and a general decline. Though that’s the consensus, for critics and viewers alike The officethere is less consensus as to whether the decline was caused by missing Michael Scott or whether it would have happened anyway.

Carell reprises his role at the end of The office, although Michael Scott has already said goodbye. The latest episode turns his attention to other characters, just as Carell had hoped in the aftermath of his departure. Ultimately, while there is some division of opinion surrounding the sitcom’s exit over the past couple of seasons, there’s no denying that the show has demonstrated tremendous staying power.
