The premiere of the series “Idol” (another name – “Idol”) with The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp in the lead roles will take place out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The show was directed by Euphoria author Sam Levinson. This edition of IndieWire was reported by insiders dedicated to the details of the production of the picture. The film screening will take place from 16 to 27 May. At the same time, it is not known how many episodes of the six-episode show will be shown: the first two or three. The creators are debating whether to show the third series, which ends with an important plot twist.
Representatives of HBO have not confirmed the screening of “Idol” in Cannes. Despite this, IndieWire writes that The Weeknd had long intended to bring the show to the festival. The publication adds that at the Cannes Film Festival before that, Jane Campion’s series “Top of the Lake” and David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: Return” were shown out of competition. However, neither The Weeknd nor Sam Levinson have much experience at Cannes.

The script for “Idol” was written by The Weeknd in collaboration with Levinson and Reza Fahim. The story follows a young pop star played by Lily-Rose Depp. She begins dating a mysterious nightclub owner and secret cult member in Los Angeles (The Weeknd).
It was previously reported that the show will air in June 2023. In April last year, it became known that they decided to partially re-shoot and re-edit the series, removing one of the female characters, as the musician did not like that the plot “went into the feminist agenda.” Insiders attribute this to Abel’s conflict with production director Amy Seimetz, who left the project due to creative differences with the singer.
