Marvel’s Black Panther spin-off series appears to be taking an unexpected direction

It’s been two years since we heard about a Black Panther spin-off series set in Wakanda with franchise director Ryan Coogler at the helm. After sinking into obscurity, the series is talking about it again. Probably thanks to the box office success of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

To recall, Disney first signed an exclusive five-year shared television deal with Ryan Coogler in February 2021, with plans to create a Disney+ drama set in the kingdom of Wakanda. A production company, Maglev Train Productions, was then formed for the spin-off in July 2021.

Shortly after the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore announced Collider that there was no wakanda series”Advanced as people want“, but hinted that the big ideas were passed on to Ryan Coogler.

As part of The Hot Mic podcast, American critic Jeff Snyder shared a rumor that the Black Panther-centric Disney+ spin-off series that Marvel Studios is developing with Ryan Coogler will be called “City of Gold” – a reference to Birnin Zana, the capital city. Wakanda – and, to everyone’s surprise, it would be an animated film. The announcement was followed by a tweet:

“Rumor: Marvel and Ryan Coogler are developing a Disney+ animated series set in Wakanda called THE GOLDEN CITY.”

Good idea ?

Although it was never explicitly stated, most people assumed that the Wakanda series would be live-action. Kingdom’s decision to dive into the world of animation may seem sudden, but it can actually turn out to be quite wise.

On the one hand, the animation format will allow you to explore larger and more impressive regions, and to do so in a freer way than in real footage. On the other hand, it could bring more high-profile actors to the MCU than the live-action series.

Just look at the cast that Marvel Studios has assembled for what if…? Realize how much talent can be had for an episode or two when all it takes is a quick voiceover job.

It’s not yet known what the Wakandan series will be about, but one option could be an animated anthology that examines the various tribes, lifestyles, culture, and characters of Wakanda. This will help blend in the series’ new characters and returning guest characters.
