“Athlete” dancers showcase show tunes like “Opus Cactus,” “Lunar Sea,” and Alchemia; see this and other weekend attractions
The Momix dance company, created by American choreographer Moses Pendleton, brings the show to Brazil Long live Momix, which celebrates 40 years of the group. This is the first time in five years that the company has performed here.
Viva Momix traces the best moments of its four decades. In two acts, the “athletic dancers” present excerpts from performances such as opera cactus (2001), Lunar sea (2005), remix (2011), botany (2009) and Alchemy (2014).
According to Pendleton, head of artistic direction of Momix, the show, which, following the company’s tradition of mixing dance, illusionism and props, has a language accessible to the public.
“We combine all the elements of dance and theater in a sort of alchemical process of mixing and transformation, which results in this dance style that is as visual as it is kinetic,” she says.
The choreographer goes further. He says the choreography offers an “escape” into a world of beauty, humor and imagination.
Pendleton celebrates his return to Brazil. “Brazil is one of our favorite countries to perform. A culture that highly values music and dance. Its Carnival and body worship are a perfect match for us,” he says.
He has a warning for Brazilians: next year Momix will return to Brazil with an unprecedented show, based on the classic story of Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. “Think of something like Momix in Wonderland,” she suggests.
