Italy temporarily bans ChatGPT

The country accuses the platform of illegally taking personal data

Italy decided this Friday (31) to temporarily ban the services of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence platform from the country, with immediate effect.

According to the Guarantor, the Italian data protection body, the suspension will remain in force until ChatGPT adapts to the regulations of the European country.

The Guarantor also found a lack of information for users of the US company OpenAI’s platform, especially with regard to user data.

Local authorities contest the absence of a legal basis justifying the mass collection and storage of personal data of Italians.

The popular software, which can simulate and process human conversations, had its data breached in March, mainly user conversations and payment information of paid service subscribers.

OpenAI is not based in the European Union, but has appointed a representative for the region. The company must communicate the measures taken in relation to the case within 20 days. .
