Ukraine says Russian shelling kills six and wounds eight in eastern country

Six civilians were killed and eight injured after a Russian shelling of the eastern Ukraine town of Kostiantynivka on Sunday, a senior Ukrainian official said.

Kostiantynivka, the town where some 70,000 people lived before the war, is just 20km west of Bakhmut, the epicenter of at least eight months of fighting as Russian forces try to capture the town.

“The Russians carried out massive shelling in the city of Kostiantynivka,” Andriy Yermak, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, said via messaging app Telegram.

He said 16 apartment buildings, eight private homes, a kindergarten and an administrative building were damaged.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the authenticity of the photos or the number of victims.
