Dwayne Johnson announces that Disney will make Moana live

Disney has successfully run its animated catalog of live-action remakes (usually with CG elements) for years. But they are usually decades after the originals. With the announcement, originally courtesy of CEO Bob Iger to shareholders, but via The Rock to the public, that in 2016 moana joins the list; you have to wonder if the live action version will be announced for, shall we say, the next one Desire one week after the original arrived.

It’s the start of the new movie, but at first glance Dwayne Johnson will be back as Maui. “I am deeply honored and overwhelmed with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of moana on the big screen in live action,” he said in a statement. “This story is my culture and this story is emblematic of the grace and warrior strength of our people. I wear this culture with pride on my skin and in my soul, and this unique opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the windfall and spirit of my late grandfather, Grand Chief Peter Maivia, is profound. For me. I would like to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this particular endeavor, as I there is no better world to honor our people’s history, passion and purpose than through the dominance of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as a Polynesian people.

Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the title character, appears to be producing behind the scenes this time around, while original co-director Jared Bush will be involved alongside Dana Ledoux Miller. The actual details are yet to come, but hopefully they know the way…
