The Roys reunited: the karaoke scene of ‘Succession’ 4×02 reminds us why we need Logan, Connor, Kendall, Shiv and Roman.
The last game of the Roys is underway and, After the karaoke scene of ‘Succession’ 4×02, it is clear that the best HBO Max series has returned.
If in the first episode of season 4, the beginning of the end of ‘Succession’, they showed us the board, in this 4×02 we have been able to see the first movements of the chips and, as expected, Logan plays offense, he doesn’t have time for the game to drag on and he plans to take the king whoever falls.
‘Succession’ 4×02: The rehearsal
Logan begins by retaking direct control of ATN and, for this, he visits the newsroom and announces his plans. A complete revamp is underway, cuts included, and one of the first beneficiaries appears to be Kerry, at least until her tryout tape to become the network’s new face becomes a laughingstock to everyone lucky enough to see it. see her Greg, of course, will end up paying the price because of Tom.
On the other hand, Stewy and Sandi confess to the brothers that they want to veto the GoJo acquisition at the next Waystar board meeting to negotiate a price increase. Although Shiv dismisses his proposal, a call from Matsson to explain that he will cancel the acquisition if pressed leads Kendall to take an interest in Stewy and Sandi’s offer.
Logan decides to intervene and, to do so, he has to see the children in person no matter what. Fortune wants them to be reunited with Connor who, although he does not finish locating his fiancée, tries to celebrate his bachelor party as best he can.
The ‘Succession’ karaoke scene: masks off
Connor and Willa’s wedding is one of the funniest toys of the seasonbut what we did not expect is that it would become the ideal macguffin for the Roys to meet again and talk to each other like never before.
In a private karaoke room where Roman fears he’ll end up listening to the Eagles’ ‘Desperado’, Connor tortures his brothers with Leonard Cohen’s ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’ when he gets a call from his dad: he’s coming to the party.
A second call to Roman annoys everyone present shortly before Logan makes his appearance, Kerry included. His intention, of course, is that they allow the sale of GoJo, so it does not take long to appeal to the personal while he is unable to stop talking about business..
“You’re smart for thinking about money,” Poro explains, before everyone in the room finds out that Kerry has just lost his television job. “Apologies are not my thing, but if it means so much to you, then I’m sorry.“.
“Why are you apologizing, dad?” Roman is, along with Connor, the only one who seems to continue to trust that Logan might have some kind of feeling beyond greed. “Is this serious, dad? Because I think what really screwed us up was mom in Italy.”
That’s when Kendall breaks loose and puts (some of) the cards on the table: “Tell us, dad, what else are you feeling? To have passed on Connor his whole fucking life?“
“Don’t go too far,” Connor replies before Kendall continues, “Hit Roman as a kid?“
“Everybody hit me. I’m a fucking boreRoman replies. “Send Connor’s mom to the asylum?” Kendall gets no response and that’s when Shiv takes over: “Give Tom divorce advice? That would cost you yours, you outdid yourself.”
After hiding and victimizing himself like a father who is ignored by his children, the real reason for Logan’s visit escapes him again: “The thing is, if we ask for more money, Matsson retires. I know it.”
“You don’t know, you don’t know. You don’t know everything, dammitShiv replies angrily. “It’s not true because you say so. It becomes true when everyone agrees with you and believes you. Then you can say: do you see? I was right. But things are not like that, you are a fucking manipulator.”
“Look, I just want us to be together, you don’t realize that it’s a good agreement. The world likes it, it makes sense,” Logan explains one last time, who, given the refusal of his children, gives up: “You’re fucking idiots, cunt. You are not serious people. I love you, but you are not serious people“.
As we watch the patriarch storming down a grimy New York sidewalk toward his luxury vehicle, Shiv and Kendall enjoy the high of screwing over Dad, Roman finds himself unable to enjoy the game, and Connor, still unaware of Willa, confesses his secret as if he were Bruce Banner himself:
“The good thing about having a family that doesn’t love you is that you adapt. You persecute dad begging him to love you, to listen to you. You are dry sponges of love, I am a plant that grows on stones and lives on insects. If Willa doesn’t come back, she doesn’t care. I don’t need love. It’s like a super power. And if he comes back, but he doesn’t love me, it doesn’t matter, because I don’t need it. Thanks for the party”.
So, what can we do now?
Connor, the king of the 1%, has made up for himself as a much more complex character than expected. There’s a broken human being behind the jester costume who doesn’t know he is.
Something similar has happened with Roman who, after giving clues during these first two chapters, ends the episode meeting Logan again without knowing that father has a move reserved for him in the form of betrayal towards his brothers.
“You’re not Pierce, intelligent people know what they are,” he blurts out to a stunned Roman who doesn’t think he really wants him on ATN.
“More, Romulus. FurtherLogan Roy replies.I need you“.
