Super Mario Bros: Why Mario’s original voice didn’t fit

Since the release of the VO trailer for Super Mario Bros., American audiences have criticized Chris Pratt’s choice to double Mario.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri and the American actor were quick to take the stage to explain that they wanted to bring something new. Chris Pratt said:I’m voting for a revamped animated character, and it’s something you’ve never heard before in the Mario universe.”.

However, after watching the trailer, English-speaking fans were not convinced. The latter just hear Chris Pratt’s voice on Mario and don’t understand where “never heard” is.

Chris Pratt recently returned to the controversy, explaining why the original voice of the little plumber in the video games didn’t work for the movie. He also took the opportunity to do an impersonation of the protagonist of the Nintendo game, more faithfully than he does in the original version of the film.

On the BBC’s The One show, Pratt explains:Mario only says a few words in the game, like ‘Woah!’, ‘It’s me!’ ‘Let’s go!’.

“Okay, we understand it’s you.”

Charlie Day, who voices Luigi, responded by noting that his accomplice couldn’t stop repeating these words throughout the film’s 90 minutes, adding with a chuckle:After 10 minutes, it’s a good thing we realized it was you.

The Guardians of the Galaxy actor added a few days later on the micAdditional TV :”Talking about passionate fans, I understand them, I am one of them. This is all our youth. They don’t want anyone ruining it for money. But the creators put their heart and soul into making the movie an homage to video games and the Mario universe. He then urged the audience to go see the film instead of talking about it without realizing it.

On the French side, the animated characters are dubbed by specialized dubbing actors: Pierre Tessier voices Mario, and Benoît du Pak lends his voice to Luigi.

Super Mario Bros, the movie is currently in our cinemas.
