Amy Schumer was supposed to be Barbie in the movie, but some shoes caused her to turn down the role

The cast of “Barbie” is full of famous actors and even Dua Lipa will be a mermaid doll, but at some point the protagonist would look very different because Margot Robbie was not the first actress chosen.

From what has been seen in the movie’s trailers and posters, it looks like Margot Robbie was born to play the doll, but Mattel chose Amy Schumer for the lead role first.

Amy Schumer was set to star in ‘Barbie’ instead of Margot Robbie

Just as there are plenty of actresses who turned down a role that ended up winning an Oscar and regretted their decision, Amy Schumer might end up regretting leaving the movie ‘Barbie,’ which appears to be a hit.

In December 2016, it was announced that Sony and Mattel had hired Schumer to star in a live-action Barbie movie. However, months later the actress left the project.

In March 2017, Schumer herself announced that she was leaving the “Barbie” project due to scheduling conflicts and told “Variety” that she was very sad because the film had a lot of potential.

“Unfortunately, I can no longer commit to ‘Barbie’ due to scheduling conflicts. The movie has a lot of promise and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m upset, but I can’t wait to see Barbie on the big screen.”

The movie version of “Barbie” with Schumer was going to portray an inventor doll who would be kicked out of Barbieland because she wasn’t perfect like the other dolls and dolls.

Amy Schumer turned down the role of Barbie for some shoes

In fact, it was Schumer’s vision for Barbie that caused him to turn down the role. In a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old comedian revealed the real reason for her departure.

According to what was known from the original script, Barbie was to be an inventor, but Sony insisted that one of the things the doll invented was a pair of jelly slippers.

“They certainly didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it.”

And the moment she realized her visions were very much at odds was when the studio sent her a pair of Manolo Blahniks to celebrate accepting the role.

“The idea that this (shoes) is exactly what every woman should want, that’s where I should have said, ‘You’ve got the wrong girl’.”

Eventually, the film was passed from Sony to Warner Bros. and Greta Gerwig wrote the script, who is also directing the film. While the lead role was given to Margot Robbie.

Amy Schumer is convinced she made the right choice, but until ‘Barbie’ hits theaters she won’t be able to prove her wrong, and if it’s a hit, she might regret walking away from the movie a little.

“Barbie” starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Ariana Greenblatt and Will Ferrell will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
