Grendizer, a cartoon from Japan, enjoyed phenomenal success in several European countries in the 1980s, particularly in France, Italy and Belgium.
This children’s program tells the story of a young prince, Actarus, whose distant planet is attacked by the warrior empire Vega. He manages to escape the carnage by escaping aboard the giant robot Grendizer to start a new life on Earth.
There are many other supporting characters in the cartoon, including Alcor, who is Actarus’ main page. He is an impulsive and reckless young NASA engineer who will fight Vega’s forces with Grendizer. At first a simple small experimental vessel, the OV-Terre, before Professor Procion created a much more powerful vehicle, the Alcorak.
Professor Procyon is the very man who collected and received Actarus when he came to Earth, a sort of paternal authority figure in this. He is a scientist, the director of a space research center located on a ranch, one of the main locations of the animated series.
Which brings us to Rigel, the ranch owner, a breath of cartoon humor that was sometimes considered too violent at the time. A man with an angry personality, fascinated by the American Wild West, who spends his time making contact with aliens. He has a daughter, Venusia, in love with Actarus, who initially ignores all about his extraterrestrial past before learning the truth and supporting him in his fight against Vega’s forces.
