The “Frozen in Concert” show brings the magic of animation to life with live music

Ulysses Cruz directs exhibition of 2013 film – now in stage version, with 67 musicians and 20 singers performing on stage, at Parque Villa-Lobos

When it was released in 2013, the animation Frozen an icy adventure it soon became a craze for the children. There was no shortage of versions of songs made by mothers, fathers, uncles, grandparents on the internet – no matter the age, what really mattered was interpreting the most emblematic scenes. Because the audience that misses the story of sisters Anna and Elsa will be able to kill their nostalgia with the show Frozen in concertwhich opens on Thursday 13 at Parque Villa-Lobos.

In a marquee set up in the park, the film will be projected on a 12mx5m LED screen. But it will be a presentation as well as a film session, as it will have live music, with 67 musicians on stage, under the direction of the conductor Natalia Orangeira. To complete the show, which is directed by Ulysses Cruz20 actors and singers will perform the songs live.

With several names in musical theater making up the cast, Letícia Soares and Giulia Nadruz they were chosen to give voice to the princesses Elsa and Anne, respectively. The two actresses reveal their desire to get on stage to stage a show like this, different from what they are used to. “We work a lot with musical theatre, but this concert format is very different from what we are used to”, says Giulia, in an interview with Stadium. “Here the film is shown simultaneously, which requires total synchronicity with the exhibition,” she says.

characters

“This film has such a strong place in people’s hearts, that’s why we have a responsibility to not only meet but also exceed audience expectations,” Letícia assesses. It will be in that moment, on stage, with everything going on, that the magic will happen, and it will all make sense, the actress believes. According to the two protagonists, the show is a tribute to the characters, in the midst of this atmosphere proposed in the plot. But this is not a literal interpretation, they explain. “People will look and identify that it’s Elsa and Anna, but it’s a version within the concept of the concert. The essence of the characters is there, but with a new outfit,” says Giulia.

Despite having experience in this area of musicals, Letícia reveals that it is a challenge for her. “That’s the beauty of the theater, with each new job we have the opportunity to acquire new skills,” says the actress. Everything for her has facilitated her professional growth and required more dedication, such as “focusing on singing lessons, looking for the hem of the phono skirt, studying at home in a different way”, that’s what a new job adds. “It’s very rewarding to be on stage and put into practice what we have achieved with our preparation.”

Furthermore, it underlines the issue of representativeness. “Having a black Elsa on stage is showing children that everything is possible, that dreams are achievable, beyond what society imposes, and now they are a mirror,” the actress reflects on her social role.

Official voice actress of the character Bela, from Disney, Giulia says she has worked for a long time in a more classic universe, exploring a lot of opera singing, very different from what she now has in Frozen in Concert. It was very interesting for her to return to this more modern place. “The nice thing about our profession, especially, is that you can migrate, play games, try different things,” she says.

synchronicity

According to the two singers, one of the biggest challenges, without a doubt, was singing in sync with the film, something they had never done before. Preparing for the show took a lot of them, but in a short period of 15 days of preparation. “We have trained a lot in these last few weeks of rehearsals to be able to perform this repertoire in an extremely synchronized way with the film, because this is the experience we offer”, says Giulia, with Letícia collaborating with her colleague. For the two, another challenge was “being the character, while not being”. This is where the instructions from the director, Ulysses Cruz, about connecting everyone on stage come in. “I asked the actors not to use the film as a basis, I prefer a deconstruction to create something new,” he said. “I also asked them not to watch the orchestra. The bet is on the interpretation”.

The result of the effort of the cast should be following the film exactly without watching it. For this, Giulia and Letícia watched the animation many times to, as they say, get to the point of not having to do it now. “We know all the lines from beginning to end, we have practiced and now we will face the audience and go back to the film,” describes Giulia. “From time to time, in peripheral vision, seeing the conductor and trusting the click, through headphones that we use to not waste time and give that feeling of synchronicity,” adds Letícia.
