Palmeiras’ 4-2 victory over Tombense this Wednesday at the Allianz Parque in the first leg of the third phase of the Copa do Brasil was special for the young Luis Guilherme. At 17 years and 62 days old, the attacking midfielder made his debut in the professional squad.

Cria da Academia came on in the 31st minute of the second half and had a golden opportunity to score. Already in the additions he got a rebound from a penalty, but he isolated even without marking.

Luis Guilherme has been training with the pros since returning from the U-20 South American Championship in February. He was linked with Verdão’s main squad for the first time last week, in Bolivia’s Bolívar’s 3-1 loss to Libertadores.

The attacking midfielder is one of the spearheads of the Palmeiras youth team. Last season he won the quadruple title of the under-17 season (Campeonato Paulista, Brasileiro, Copa do Brasil and Supercopa). Furthermore, he has the San Paolo Cup in his curriculum at just 15 years old.

At the under-20 South American championship, he lifted the trophy with the Brazil national team at the age of 17. He, incidentally, was the youngest athlete to defend Brazil in the category in the century.

Now, Luis Guilherme expects another chance with Abel Ferreira next Saturday, when Palmeiras take on Cuiabá, for the first round of the Brazilian championship. The ball rolls onto the Allianz Parque lawn from 4pm (Brasilia time).
