Dungeons and Dragons: Notice this common ground with Game of Thrones?

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary role-playing game to the big screen in a fun, action-packed adventure.

Shooting in Belfast

Dungeons & Dragons: Thieves’ Honor began filming on May 4, 2021 near Belfast, Northern Ireland. A place that allowed access to incredible sets that could not be found anywhere else. “The natural beauty combined with the exotic locations creates a feeling of another world and another time that fits the film perfectly”, Jonathan Goldstein explains. Belfast is famous for hosting the TV series Game of Thrones.

Whenever possible, the production traveled to locations in Northern Ireland and even Iceland, hoping to capture the natural landscape and create an authentically expansive setting for this ambitious adventure. The directors wanted to avoid blue and green screens as much as possible. John Francis Dale explains: “That said, we still used a lot of things for our shoot, but the standout elements are the huge sets that our production designer is amazing at, Ray Chan, created He is a visionary. It’s about, I think, all the visual aspects of the story that the fans love, and it adds to that.”

The iconic game

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Thieves is inspired by the game Dungeons and Dragons, the first tabletop role-playing game in the medieval fantasy genre. Created in the 1970s, its original title is “Dungeons & Dragons”, which actually means “Dungeons and Dragons”, “dungeon” being a false friend in English.

The role-playing game is a narrative of adventures in worlds inhabited by warriors and wizards. Games can last for hours, days or even weeks. “It’s one of the most important and enduring elements of American pop culture, and it’s a real privilege to tell the story that took place in that world.”– says producer Jeremy Latcham. “It’s a huge responsibility to handle such an adoration worldwide.”

The most beloved first franchise

This is not the first time that the iconic game has been adapted for the cinema. The film, directed by Courtney Solomon, was released in 2000 and was worn by Justin Wallin, Marlon Wayans and Jeremy Irons. This Dungeons & Dragons game received acclaim from both the public and critics (magazine Empire It was ranked 39th on the list of the 50 worst movies of all time in 2010). However, there were two sequels: Dungeons & Dragons, Supreme Power (2005) and Dungeons and Dragons 3, Book of Darkness (2012).

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Thieves is directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Dale, screenwriters of How Did You Kill Your Boss? and the directors of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Game Night. John Francis Dale is also known as a comedian: we saw him in the TV series Freaks and Geeks (he was 14 at the time) and Bones.

This adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons is designed to appeal to both fans of the game and those who have never played it. The film is a balance between action, adventure, fantasy and comedy. For Chris Pine, “This movie reminds me of all the great ’80s movies. There’s a little bit The princess bride and a little moods ; from Monty Python, Holy Grail also. There is a bit of Game Of Thrones. He manages to combine all these tones and colors into one really fun film. It’s a classic journey of a hero and a bunch of misfits trying to get better, doing their best and trying to get better.”
