You can take off your muffs with complete peace of mind: ‘Baywatch’ will return to patrol the coast of Santa Monica.
Television production company Fremantle is in talks to launch a new version of ‘Baywatch’the classic 90s action drama starring David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra and other bodies sculpted by the gods (and plastic surgeons).
Fremantle has been behind a reboot of the legendary series for quite some time, especially from the 2017 film remake starring Dwayne Johnson, Alexandra Daddario and Zac Efron (‘Baywatch: Baywatch’) and the remastering of the episodes of the original series in 2018. In that year, the production company’s director of operations, Bob McCourt, stated: “We thought the movie might have given us a reason to reboot the TV series, but things were delayed a bit.. If this remastered version sells widely and a new audience comes to the series, then we’ll have a real indication of whether a remake could be successful. We would definitely seriously think about doing a new series and maybe some stations will approach us about doing one..”
Bad movie reviews “killed” that rebootbut the recent rise in popularity of Pamela Anderson thanks to the Disney+ series ‘Pam & Tommy’ and its Netflix documentary seem to have put the series back in the crosshairs of industry reboots.
‘Baywatch’ was created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory J. Bonann, and followed a group of lifeguards patrolling the beaches of Santa Monica, Los Angeles. The show was originally produced for NBC, but was canceled after its first season.. At that point, the producers believed in the series enough to buy back the rights and create a new episode in search of a new home. The gamble paid off in a big way, as ‘Baywatch’ became one of the most watched series in the world (the arrival of Pamela Anderson in the third season as CJ Parker had a lot to do with it) and was on the air for ten more seasons.
