With an increase in electricity, see how to save now

Faced with rising electricity prices, the financial educator teaches strategies to get around the high costs

Rising electricity prices were one of the factors responsible for 2/3 of Brazil’s official inflation last March. It is because the electricity is below 2.23%, which means a contribution of 0.09 percentage point, in the National Index of Prices for Large Consumers (IPCA), in compliance with IBGE data.

Among the Brazilian states and cities that saw an increase in energy prices are: Porto Alegre (advance of 9.79%, due to changes in the calculation of ICMS), Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Vitória and Rio de Janeiro (where there were readjustments of 7.49 % and 6% in the two concessionaires).

Aline Soaper He warns that simple strategies can be applied to help save money and even reduce energy costs.

“Before implementing any savings method, consumers should set a reduction target with their family or team for the coming month. Start with 10%, get everyone from home involved and work to help with this task, create a competition with a reward for those who save the most. Unplugging any devices that are not being used, such as cell phone chargers, are very important. It’s a myth to think that they aren’t consuming energy just because they’re not being used at the time. Other household appliances that use a lot of electricity is a geladeira, então evite deixá-la perto del fogão o da janela que bata sol direto, porque será necessário exigir mais energia para mantê-la gelada”, suggests Aline Soaper.

The electric shower is the big bad of the light bill

According to the National Electricity Conservation Program (Procel), the electric chuveiro can represent 43% of the energy consumption of a residence. To give you an idea, information from a series on energy, produced by the University of São Paulo (USP), points out that considering a family of four people, who take 15-minute showers a day, the amount spent in a month with An electric shower would be $100.

“Now in April we have temperature fluctuations in several Brazilian states. And with that, in some periods when the weather gets a little colder, people early turn on their shower to winter mode. According to specialists in energy consumption, deixar or chuveiro in the real way, even in the winter mode, you can contribute to a 30% reduction in the household light count. Another tip I always recommend is to avoid long showers,” Soaper explains.

Late payment of the bill turned into a nightmare

Shares with energy have a very big problem, which at the end of the year Enel has launched a share negotiation bell for the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Ceará and Goiás. Discounts reached up to 30% and debts could still be paid in 21 installments.

Another survey, in 2022, done by Serasa, showed that the lack of payment of water and electricity bills broke a record in the last four years. The non-payment rate reached 23.2%, which accounted for more than 37 million overdue invoices.

With basic bills in arrears, consumers have even had to take out loans to settle debts. It was the case of Aline Leite, moradora de São Paulo, who comes to charge the electricity bills and you need to contract an empréstimo to pay the charges.

“I had several energy bills in arrears. I paid installments, but ended up not paying the first installment. I had the energy cut and then I could no longer make installments. I had to borrow money from other people to pay the bill,” Leite reveals.
