The biographical drama The Shadow of Caravaggio, directed by Michele Placido, will premiere on April 28 at the KION online cinema. This is an action-packed story about the life of a scandalous artist who found models for his masterpieces on the streets. The main roles in the film were played by Italian movie star Riccardo Scamarchio, French actor and director Louis Garrel, and Isabelle Huppert.
Before sitting in the director’s chair, Michele Placido excelled in his acting career. He starred in the series The Octopus (1984-2001), Giuseppe Tornatore’s The Stranger (2006) and Salvatore Samperi’s Ernesto, for which he received the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Also, Placido is a multiple nominee for the main prizes of the Venice Film Festival and the owner of a special acting prize at the Moscow International Film Festival.
The premiere of his new directorial project – the film “The Shadow of Caravaggio” – took place at the Rome Film Festival. For this picture, he received five nominations for the David di Donatello award. Placido conceived a film that would show the true Caravaggio – with all his vices and virtues, in all his humanity, deep and primitive – and at the same time reveal the whole truth about his era: its sights, smells and tastes. The director’s vision brings to the fore the impenetrable darkness of a genius, paradoxically capable of illuminating the world with his art, as well as a personality in bitter conflict with himself.
Cinematographer Michele D’Attanasio is known for his work on the series “Gomorrah” and the film “Our Father”. The script of the film was written by Placido in collaboration with Fidel Signorile and winner of the prizes of the Berlin Film Festival Sandro Petraglia.
