The Abril Verde Movement reinforces the importance of accident reporting and an international standard helps reduce company leave cases
Data from the Occupational Health and Safety Observatory highlighted 612.9 thousand reports of workplace accidents in 2022, with an increase of 14.3% compared to the previous year – which totaled 536.1 thousand reports. The lack of safety for carrying out work activities was one of the reasons for the greatest damage to companies and also to the State, which is increasingly taking on a greater number of permits.
Data from the National Social Security Institute (INSS) show that in 2022 48,000 social security benefits were provided to people who suffered accidents at work. One of the solutions increasingly adopted by companies to reduce sickness absences, ISO 45001, Occupational Health and Safety Management System, allows to reduce the risk of accidents, occupational diseases and costs, by implementing safety guidelines for the whole organization.
“When searching for a certification body to verify the implementation of the standard, the company will be assessed and guided on which points need to be improved, whether inspection is required, whether mandatory safety equipment is met or whether actions are required educational for employees”, explains Paulo Bertolini, general manager of APCER Brasil, certifier of Portuguese origin with international operations.
ISO 45001 can be applied to organizations of all sectors and sizes and integrates easily with other ISO standards, such as ISO 9001 – Quality Management System – and ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System. “Also note the reduction in costs, considering that with fewer injured workers, the greater the continuity of the activity will be. The standard also brings greater motivation in the company to guarantee a safe and healthy work environment”, completes Bertolini.
Green April Movement
The month was chosen because April 28 is World Day for Safety and Health at Work, given in memory of the accident that took place on the same day in 1969 in the United States in which 78 workers were killed in an explosion of a mine.
The movement has actions to raise awareness of the importance of ensuring occupational health and safety, promote a culture of workplace injury prevention, as well as reinforce the importance of case notification.
