At least 16 people have drowned after a boat capsized in Malappuram district of the southern Indian state of Kerala, state fisheries and port development minister V. Abdurahiman said on Sunday.
Twelve bodies have been identified, he told reporters at the crash site, adding that the death toll could rise because the boat had become stuck in the mud and was being lifted and torn apart to rescue those trapped inside.
“Dismayed by the loss of life in a boating accident in Malappuram, Kerala,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet.
