Successes and errors of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’, the new Marvel movie that you can already see in the cinema

James Gunn’s trilogy concludes with a final installment to match… or maybe not?

The premiere of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ of Marvel has supposed the culmination of almost ten years of history. Gone is that first meeting in one of the best Marvel movies, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, in which Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) stole that Orb to the rhythm of “Come and Get Your Love” by the band Redbone.

Later that second volume would arrive which, under an explosion of colors, served to strengthen the feeling of camaraderie of a group made up of himself Quill, Rocket, Drax, Baby Groot and Gamorain addition to Mantis and Yondu.

We would have the participation of the Guardians in that event that marked the high point of Marvel, the wonderful ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. And finally, after appearing very briefly in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and to star ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Happy Holidays Special’It’s time to say goodbye.

Now that we can enjoy the farewell to James Gunn and his crew of space misfits, let’s see where Marvel’s Phase 5 movie hits and misses. Are you ready for one last adventure? Let’s get on the Bowie!

Spoilers for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ ahead.

    Hits

Let’s start with the positive part, which is actually 95% of the film because, as we indicated in our review, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ is the best film in James Gunn’s trilogy and a triumph for Marvel.

The first of them is the triumph of an unleashed James Gunn who signs here the best film of his filmography and gives us a deep reflection on loneliness and the chosen family, in a constant balance between emotion and laughter marked by an unusual shade of rawness. In the visual aspect, this balance is also reflected with bright colors, like the fleshy organic space station, and also muted ones, like everything that surrounds the experiments with animals and that make the film have a very gloomy setting in different sections. according to what you are narrating. And pay attention to a sequence shot that shows why the Guardians are the best team in Marvel.

A fundamental aspect of the film is that the heroic Guardians find their place and everyone has their moment. Gunn corrects, for example, that excessive parody of Drax (Dave Bautista) in the second installment and ends the Nebula arc brilliantly, turning this impeccable former assassin into one of Marvel’s best female characters. It is always pointed out that we are dealing with characters with a heart and, in this installment, it beats stronger than ever.

Undoubtedly, if one character has to be mentioned above the rest, it is our beloved raccoon. James Gunn himself said at the time that he returned to Marvel to finish the story of Rocket. He is the heart of the Guardians and more in this movie. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) cedes some of the limelight to “his best friend of his” so we can discover the painful origin of him.

If Gunn was blamed for anything, it was his poor portrayal of the villains in previous installments (although looking at what has come after in Phase 4, Ronan and Ego almost seem like two of the best villains in movie history). Forget this. Chukwudi Iwuji brings to life the High Evolutionary, a terrible enemy, a narcissistic sadist who would be a space version of the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, who punishes us with some of the most difficult to digest moments in the entire MCU (something that is perfectly reflected in the scene in which the Guardians access the archive showing the truth about Rocket’s experiments). We are facing one of the best Marvel villains.

    Mistakes

Not everything is perfect and, although minimal, there are two things that we can point out.

On the one hand, the most important post-credit scene of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ presented us with the cocoon from which it would emerge Adam Warlock, who was announced as the villain of this third installment. Although his role has some weight, it is true that is wasted, because we are facing a closure and there is no time to lose. Despite the fact that his entry into action serves to mark the development of the tape and that, in his final redemption, he manages to save Star-Lord’s life, we have been left wanting more. However, the character he gives life to Will Poulter It is a long-term plan because it will be one of the future main characters of the UCM.

Finally, in a movie that lasts 150 minutes there are some details that remain in the air and we believe that a brief explanation would not have been bad at all. For example, where do those blue and red costumes so true to those in the comics come from? What happened to Star-Lord’s iconic helmet? Let’s remember that Chris Pratt’s favorite scene in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trilogy is related to his helmet, present in all the character’s previous interventions.

With a farewell in style, the big question is whether another director will dare in the future with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 4’. The challenge is not easy at all because with the departure of Gunn -and with that unique personality to understand these characters- he seems like a poisoned candy.
