STF judges over 250 accused of acts of coup

Moraes accepted the complaint against the fourth group of suspects.

The Supreme Federal Court (STF) has begun hearing complaints against more than 250 people involved in the January 8 coup acts. It is the fourth group under investigation, totaling 800 of the 1,300 complaints filed by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

The virtual trial began at midnight and will end on Monday (15). In virtual mode, the ministers deposit their votes in an electronic system and there is no deliberation in person.

The first vote was cast by the rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who ruled in favor of the charges for the crimes of armed criminal association, violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, qualified damage and incitement to crime.

If a majority of ministers uphold the allegations, the defendants will begin to answer to a prosecution and will become defendants in the trial, and may be convicted or acquitted at the end of the proceedings. The Federal Supreme Court has so far investigated 550 defendants.
