‘Lisa’: This is the webseries that seeks to normalize autism

The actress and tiktoker Emma Cunill stars in this series, with titles such as ‘Sex Education’, ‘American Vandal’ or ‘Paquita Salas’ as references, which has a double objective: to entertain and raise awareness about the integration of people with ASD.

You can already see the four episodes, each five minutes long, that make up the first season of ‘Lisa’, the first webseries of the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC). The project stems from an original idea by Marc Roma, executive producer of the series and director of content for the production company Abacus, and has been shot under the direction of the directors and screenwriters Ingride Santos (‘Beef’, nominated for Best Short Fiction at the Goya 2016) and Raquel Barrera (‘The girl with the hook’), with the participation of students from the Vic campus of the degree in Audiovisual Communication and the higher level training cycle in 3D Animation. Games and interactive environments. A mixture of professionals and students to capture a humorous fiction, with a daring and carefree look, but with a doubly transcendent background theme. On the one hand, promote the presence of female students in scientific and technological careers, normally very masculinized studies. And on the other, to normalize the presence of people within the autistic spectrum in the university setting.

Lisa’s new world

Lisa lands at UVIc to study, yes, but also to discover a whole new world linked to the university: new friendships, new challenges and new scenarios that will give rise to a series of misunderstandings and comic situations. Emma Cunill is Lisa and, like her character, she is also a person on the autism spectrum, something that she has spoken about in a pleasant and unapologetic tone in her profile of TikTok. His style, as well as the narration on camera and the use of formats and frames typical of those used in social networks, is an evident influence on the series, in which he has also participated in writing the scripts. Along with Cunill, heading the cast, we find Laia Fontàn, an emerging actress on the Catalan scene who we have seen in the series ‘Les de l’hockey’, the musical ‘Rent’ or the film ‘Appland’. She is Paula, another university student who shares a room and experiences with Lisa.

beyond the screens

Filmed during the month of February entirely at the UVic-UCC facilities, ‘Lisa’ is also the starting point of an awareness campaign that seeks to transcend beyond the screens. With the use of the motto ‘Neither Loser nor wimp’, the creators of the series demonstrate a clear commitment to integration and reversal of roles, starting from the common thread of the plot and how someone with acceptance problems can become a reference for your environment, face-to-face or digital. Something that was brought to the fore in the recent presentation of the project but that is still valid thanks to its presence on networks and the call to participate in different challenges linked to this pioneering web series.
