    — Spoilers for ‘Hell’s Possession: Awakening’ —

Mommy is with the worms now“. The new installment of the ‘Evil Dead’ saga has scenes as unpleasant as they are memorable, and phrases to remember that will compete over time with the “Groovy” or “Klaatu Barada Nikto” of the classic movies.

‘Infernal Possession: Awakening’ makes a big change in the franchise: from the cabin in the woods we go to a skyscraper in Los Angeles, with a family facing off against an army of Deadites in their own home. The film directed by Lee Cronin continues with the gore of the 2013 remake, moving away from the humorous tone of the Sam Raimi films, with a festival of blood and guts like we have rarely seen before.

However, some doubts arise about its approach and its outcome. Where did this ‘Naturon Demonto’, the new Necronomicon, come from? Does Beth manage to contain the Deadites?

‘Infernal Possession: Awakening’: Bruce Campbell’s cameo

The prologue of ‘Infernal Possession: The Awakening’ makes us think that we are before a new film of “cabin in the woods”, a whole subgenre of horror cinema in itself. we even see a sequence shot very similar to the camera flights used by Raimi in the original trilogy and that over time has become one of his characteristic stamps, even using it in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

However, This is not a beginning, but an end. After seeing how the modern Deadites are spent in the lake, a little sign tells us that the action began a day before several kilometers away, in the big city. ‘Evil Dead Rise’ takes place in a dilapidated residential building in Los Angeles, where tattoo artist Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) lives with their three children, Danny (Morgan Davies), Bridget (Gabrielle Echols) and Kassie (Nell Fisher), and where they receive a surprise visit from Ellie’s sister, Beth (lily sullivan).

That night an earthquake occurs, and the children climb through a crack in the garage into a hidden basement where they discover a strange book with leather covers and some old vinyl. The eldest, Danny, plays the records on his stereo and we hear a priest explain that the book is one of three copies of the Book of the Dead, the ‘Naturon Demonto’ (also known as the Necronomicon)and reading his first passages to the bewilderment and disapproval of other parishioners who raise their voices against him for considering it a heresy. One of these voices is that of Bruce Campbell himself, in a small and hidden cameo Did you think that the actor who gave life to Ash Williams would not appear in this movie?

Ash finds the book in a graveyard, but there’s a catch. Actually, there are three Books of the Dead, and Ash needs to find out which one is the real one. Until recently, we thought there was only one Necronomicon, and the other two books were decoys. However, in a recent interview with Collider, Campbell revealed that all three books are real. “There are three of these books, as we found out in ‘Army of Darkness’, and you never know where they might turn up. So the question really is ‘where are the books now?‘”

By making the three Books of the Dead canon, Campbell solved the great mystery of one of the best sagas and with the most installments in horror cinema. Ash’s story is connected to one of the books, Mia handled a second copy of the cursed item in the remake, and now there’s a third that resurfaces in the new movie. Directed by Lee Cronin.
