Senacon will monitor fuel prices in the country

The agency’s secretary, Wadih Damous, said the inspection was essential to ensure the price cut reached the consumer.

The National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) wants state and municipal Procons across the country to monitor filling stations to see if lower average prices for petrol and diesel sales at stations have been passed on to consumers.

To this end, the agency issued a letter to the Procons on Tuesday night (16), asking them to monitor prices in the various regions of the country.

In a note released by the Senacon, the National Secretary of Consumers, Wadih Damushe said monitoring is essential to ensure that this price cut actually reaches consumers.

“We want to monitor whether this reduction has reached the pockets of consumers. In this regard, I have asked Procons throughout Brazil to exercise due vigilance”he justified by citing reports in the press that establishments allegedly raised prices suspiciously before Petrobras announced the drop.

According to Damous, these establishments will be duly inspected. “We will not accept that gas stations use fraud to raise prices today and say they have reduced tomorrow. These gas stations will be under our supervision and penalties will be applied in case of fraud”he said, assuring that the Secretariat will monitor “close” situation and who, if necessary, will adopt “additional measures to protect consumer rights and ensure fair competition in the fuel market”.

In the letter, Senacon instructs Procons to carry out a detailed survey of fuel prices at gas stations in different regions. The idea is to identify not only abusive increases, but also any ones “irregular practices that harm consumers”.

On Monday (15), the Petrobras board of directors approved a commercial strategy for pricing diesel and gasoline that ended the subordination of values to the import parity price.

The following day, this Tuesday (16th), the company announced a reduction of R$ 0.44 per liter in the average price of diesel for distributors, which will go from R$ 3.46 to R$ 3.02. The reduction in the average price of petrol is R$ 0.40 per litre, from R$ 3.18 to R$ 2.78, an amount also paid by the distributors.
