Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who faces corruption charges, said on Thursday he would not take part in an investigation by the powerful anti-corruption agency while he is out on bail.
The National Accountability Agency (NAB), which has previously investigated, tried and jailed all those who have held the post of prime minister since 2008, has already called Khan to investigate allegations of corruption, a spokesman said.
Khan was arrested on the charges, which he denies, on 9 May and later released on court-ordered bail, which was extended until 31 May.
In a statement addressed to the NAB deputy director and shown to Reuters by one of Khan’s lawyers, the former prime minister called the allegations against him “absolutely false, frivolous and fabricated”.
He said he was in the process of applying for and obtaining bail in various other legal cases and would not be available before his protective bond expired.
Khan’s arrest has unleashed a wave of violence that has exacerbated political instability in the South Asian nation of 220 million people. Pakistan is also facing its worst economic crisis ever, with critical IMF funding needed to avoid a months-delayed payments crisis.
