Mexico begins issuing passports to non-binary citizens

It is now possible to place an “x” in the genre category

Mexico, one of the most violent countries for the LGBTQIA+ population, now allows its citizens to legally identify themselves as non-binary in their passport. Mexican activist Ociel Baena received his passport at a ceremony by government officials.

Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrared said the government supported support for sexual diversity. “All rights must be guaranteed for all identities. No more hate speech: diversity enriches and flourishes.

Non-binary Mexican citizens may choose to replace a gender category with an “X”. The latest country to change its non-binary passport policy was Spain in December 2022.
