Cannes 2023 Day 9: The Dog of the Festival and the Death of Cinema, 7 Moments You Shouldn’t Miss

As every year, the AlloCiné team attends the Cannes Film Festival to make you feel the event and, as every day on the Croisette, the film news is amazing and even incredible! Here’s what to remember from Day 9 of the competition:

Accreditation that has a dog

Apparently the dog managed to get into one of the cinemas at the Palace of Festivals? Did he sneak in quietly? Did he survive the order job? Not at all: he had accreditation! A lady arrived with her dog, both of them had accreditation, there was no question of banning them from entering the room!

The story did not say if the dog belonged to the lady or if it was one of the contenders for the Palm Dog, a prize awarded annually to the festival’s “best canine performance on the big screen.” At least Pooch has seen the movie! Let’s hope he had a good time without the festival goers.

A movie that made us hungry

The pace in the skin is so intense that sometimes it is difficult to take time to eat properly. On an empty stomach, you tie yourself to screenings and interviews, obviously not daring to take with you, as we usually do in theaters, the famous little snack. You gradually get used to this state and become desensitized to the hunger that torments you… until La Passion de Dodin Bouffant by Tran Anh Hung arrives!

Close-ups of the most exquisite dishes (in this case concocted by the great chef Pierre Ganier himself), the precise gestures of Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel to prepare them at their best, gourmet discussions with scientific precision… everything looks delicious, everything is luxurious and refined. The film presented in the competition is a true celebration of French gastronomy and… a constant temptation that frightens our forgotten stomachs.

And speaking of food…

It is a Cannes Film Festival tradition: every year the City Hall invites accredited journalists to a Provençal lunch at the Place de la Castre, in the historic district of Le Suquet, at the height of the Croisette. An opportunity to taste the delicious aioli and diptych cake / lemon meringue for dessert, in a friendly atmosphere, in the presence of a full panel of judges. You can’t say no to sharing aioli with Julia Ducournau, Dennis Menochet (here, in the center of the photo, having fun with President Ruben Östlund in front of our lens), Paul Dano or Captain Marvel aka Brie Larson!

After Scorsese and Native Americans, another genocide was condemned

With The Settlers, Felipe Gálvez makes the first political feature film to adopt Western codes, painting silhouettes of horseback riders under the setting sun to a musical composition that is also part of the genre. But it is not in this sense that the film is the best. He holds more as he establishes his own style, which in particular involves a constant shift in tone.

The story takes place in 19th century Chile. A landowner hires a Chilean laborer, a Scottish lieutenant, and an American mercenary to carve a path through his vast territory. In fact, their expedition will lead to the massacre of the local population. Les Colons condemns this genocide without seeming like a history lesson and stays close to its characters. Success.

Happy birthday Warner Bros. !

In 2023, Warner Bros. celebrated their 100th anniversary. The historic and symbolic stage is as inescapable for Hollywood as the legendary water tower that dominates its filming and whose documentary filmmaker Leslie Iwerks tells the story of the Cannes classics presented in this series.

Rich in illustrations, anecdotes and encounters (Scorsese, Eastwood, Nolan, Burton, Friedkin, to name a few…), the episodes show the major turning points of a studio that has “survived, invented and reinvented itself over ten decades and kept going. Pushing the boundaries of creativity, storytelling, commerce and innovation.” To mark this anniversary on the Croisette, a beautiful gourmet structure in Warner colors graced the interview room. We didn’t dare to try it out, for fear that this sweet structure would collapse miserably. But the temptation was great…

Will cinema die?

40 years after Wim Wenders’s documentary Chambre 666, Lubna Playoust uses the same device in Chambre 999: a unique place, a camera, a filmmaker and in a few minutes to answer the question “Is a film language made? To lose. , Art that will die? Thirty filmmakers , from Wim Wenders to Audrey Divan, via David Cronenberg or Agnes Jauy, thus convey their thoughts on the state and future of the 7th art in a content- and image-saturated world dominated by streaming giants.

The conversation initiated by the film continued in the press conference hall, where the talented part invited in the documentary continued the public discussion. Among them, Monia Chokri, who begins with her candid Quebecois: “Then we’re in a rich environment. So it’s a bit ungrateful to cry… It’s embarrassing when you’re here in Cannes, in a Gucci or Chanel dress, to say that cinema is going badly…”

Young people dare to trust their skin!

Automobile project, the seventh! Since 2015, at the initiative of its founder Caroline Sénéclauze, Motor Project! Provides support, accompaniment and concrete actions to give the confidence to thousands of young people in France to reach their full potential. Aim: To include, create connections, reduce social inequality and give all chances… equal opportunities.

The new promotion of the winners, as every year, had a meeting in Cannes during two days full of emotions: the discovery of the railway station of Cannes, decorated with portraits of 25 young people (selected from a short video dedicated to an inspiring person), a meeting. With the CNC/Youtube talents, an exchange at FNAC, an interview with some media, a visit to the AlloCiné boat… and climbing the stairs today in gala clothes.

See you tomorrow for new meetings, surprises and of course… good movies!
