Writers’ strike delays yet another Marvel film

Filming on “Thunderbolts,” the upcoming MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) film centered on the franchise’s anti-heroes, has been postponed due to the US writers’ strike, according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.

What you need to know:

Marvel’s new production was expected to begin in the next few weeks in Atlanta. But now it should only start after the end of the strike. Only, for now, it is not known how long the stop in the category will last.

The movie “Thunderbolts” was supposed to be released in July 2024, although it’s not clear if that will change due to the production delay. Among the stars of the cast are: Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier) and David Harbor (Red Guardian). Already in management, the main name mentioned is Jake Schreier (“Paper Towns”).

This feature film is only the latest production affected by the WGA (US Screenwriters) strike. The union representing some 11,500 writers from film, television and other media went on strike in early May.

The category vies for salaries in an era increasingly dominated by streaming. The WGA is also looking into regulating the use of generative AI in writers’ rooms.

More delays

In addition to “Thunderbolts”, there have been reports of several other Marvel productions affected by the strike.

Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter noted that the reboot of Blade, starring Mahershala Ali, was the first major film to see production halted due to the strike (it was slated for a September 2024 release, though it is unclear whether this will happen). ). Breaks in the schedules of the series “Daredevil: Born Again” and “Magnum” have also been reported.

However, production on many other Marvel projects continues. Among them are: “Captain America: New World Order” (May 2024), “Deadpool 3” (November 2024) and “Agatha: Coven of Chaos”.

Given the interconnected nature of most Marvel films and series, the strike could have a larger ripple effect on the franchise, even if it affects only a few projects.

Marvel is far from the only studio to see its projects impacted by the writers’ strike.

Deadline noted that US TV series and shows were hit harder than movies in these early stages of the strike, especially late night talk shows. Already among the series concerned there are: Yellowjacket, Stranger Things, Ruptura, Hacks and The Hedge Knight (next spin-off of Game of Thrones).
