Love and the passage of time according to Alex Lutz: it’s Une Nuit, our latest Cannes 2023 favorite

It was presented in Cannes at the end of the Un Certain Regard Selection, a selection that, as its name suggests, offers us to look with different eyes, always enlightening, at the reality we believe we know.

Paris, a crowded subway, an evening like any other. A woman pushes a man, they argue. Very quickly, the electric current transforms into… fiery desire. Two strangers get off the train and make love in the cabin of a photo booth. The night belongs to them now. In the Paris of these deserted streets, in the long hours, will we have to say goodbye?

Alex Lutz, brilliant director (Guy), author (Catherine and Liliana) focuses on romantic encounters between men and women, each father and mother of teenagers, each with a well-developed life and led by a French actress. Une nuit, his latest film, whose idea was born from an argument he witnessed between two strangers in the subway:

“Their shouting match was full of charm, with rather down-to-earth arguments. I said to myself, ‘Hey, they seem to like each other at the same time. I imagined them having awkward sex in a subway photo booth. Well, I had that in mind.” he told us during our meeting in Cannes.

In the other corner of this always very imaginative head: his growing friendship with Karin Viard and his desire to continue working with her, “To use the energy of our friendship in the service of this story, an honest friendship where we say things honestly. I had her voice in mind, I wanted her energy to come into it when I was writing it.”

The writing line, worked, was refined as and when, complicit, with the alchemy between the two friends. All of this serves as a very beautiful reflection on the couple after a certain age, but also on individuals questioning themselves as time runs out.

“Time that leaves like sand is my favorite theme. It is our greatest tragedy and it is the fertilizer of our joy, our sorrow, our anger, our rage, our disappointment, our desire to embrace each other, our love. On the shoulder of time.”

“Also because you drunkenly tell your best friend you love me in the middle of the night. Funny, grotesque, dramatic, scary, people on the street are always a matter of time with the kids. “

In the video above, Alex Lutz talks about the challenge of his very beautiful film, in theaters July 5, 2023.
