It was in 1970, when good old Arnold Schwarzenegger was 23 years old, and he had to bend over to cover his accent…
Now that Netflix has just unveiled the trailer for its three-part documentary focused entirely on the life of arnold schwarzenegger (which will premiere on June 7) along with his new series FUBAR, it’s a more than perfect time to return to the roots of the former bodybuilder. Though Schwarzenegger is loved by movie fans the world over for his bombastic and flawless performances in films like Terminator, there was a time (albeit brief) when this 6-foot-tall hunk of human muscle with the thick accent wasn’t the globally recognizable figure we see today. In fact, many may not know that his first film was actually a low budget film about a character from Greek mythology in the Big Apple.
Seven years after becoming a professional bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was then 23 years old, back in 1969, participated in a movie titled ‘Hercules in New York’. Directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman, Schwarzenegger was so unknown at the time that not only was his accent dubbed in the film, but his name was changed in the credits and promotional material to the derisory and in-your-face “Arnold Strong.” . Does anyone give more? Schwarzenegger wasn’t even the main Arnold in the movie. That role went to the actor behind Pretzie, Arnold Stang, who was best known as a voice actor, most notably as the voice of Top Cat himself. From first impressions, he was far from the highest-paid star in Hollywood in the one that would end up becoming, but does the film itself reflect it?
The basic plot of Hercules in New York is as follows: a frustrated Hercules (Schwarzenegger) begs Zeus to travel to Earth. In a moment of anger at his constant nagging, Zeus blows up Hercules and swoops him out of the sky and straight into the ocean, where he is picked up by a fishing boat. As the ship embarks in New York, headstrong Hercules meets a pretzel vendor and sets off to experience what life is like in the human world. In terms of tone, it is about the ideals of Clash of the Titans with a plot almost identical to that of Elfo… and only a little Godzilla.
All of the humor in the film comes from Hercules misreading a situation or being misunderstood by those around him, with the script basically killing time between Arnold taking off his shirt and getting into trouble with people who want to fight him, or just taking off his shirt. . The best way to describe this movie, oddly enough, is as an oversized Woody Allen snippet. The acting is generally bad. It seems cheap. And technically, the sound doesn’t work every time Schwarzenegger opens his mouth. What is so laughable is that, even though Schwarzenegger is bent over because of how thick his accent was at the time, they have managed to replace him with a man with the ability to voice Siri. It should be noted that the original Schwarzenegger dub does exist on the DVDs.
Despite the fact that there are moments that will make you smile at its stupidity, Hercules in New York is not very good. But it can be admired as a time capsule of humble beginnings and what a person can do when they set their minds to something and refuse to give up on a dream. Because from here, Schwarzenegger would work with Jeff Bridges on Stay Hungry just a few years later and then be cast as Conan the Barbarian in John Milius’s epic. And we all know very well how he finished the rest of his career.
And the money? With many memorable roles throughout the ’80s and ’90s, his acting career as Arnold Schwarzenegger has netted more than $400 million. But his beginnings were slow; in his first appearance on the big screen He would charge about $1,000 a week.
