Released in 1992, the animated Aladdin received a live-action remake that was extremely faithful to the original. In the cast we have Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Will Smith as Genie.

101 Dalmatians

The animation released in 1961 has 3 live-action adaptations.

The first version was released in 1996 and starred Glenn Close as the evil Cruella de Vil. With relative success, the film received a sequel in 2000 titled 102 Dalmatians, which also starred Close.

The second live-action adaptation was released in 2021, under the title “Cruella”. Starring Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil, the film is a prequel that explores the origin of the villain.

The beauty and the Beast

The 1991 animation won a live-action remake in 2017 starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the beast. Faithful adaptation, this film retains the main storyline and many elements of the original work.

Sleeping Beauty

The 1959 animation received a reinterpretation in a 2014 film called “Maleficent”, where the main character is the villain played by Angelina Jolie. This adaptation offers a new perspective on the character, revealing his origins and motivations. In 2019, the sequel “Maléficent: Mistress of Evil” was released.

Cinderella

Released in 1950, the animation has a live-action adaptation released in 2015. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film retains the fairytale essence of the animation and gets the director’s signature Shakespearean touches. Starring Lily James as Cinderella and Richard Madden as the prince. The cast also includes Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter and Stellan Skarsgård.

Mowgli – The wolf boy

Released in 1967, the animation is based on the novel ‘The Jungle Book’ by Rudyard Kipling and won two live-action remakes:

The first version was released in 1994 and is an adaptation that differs significantly from the original story and animation.

The 2016 adaptation tried to be more faithful to the book and animation. The film used photorealistic visual effects to create realistic looking animals. Famous voices like Bill Murray (Baloo) and Ben Kingsley (Bagheera) brought the animals to life.

Dumbo

Released in 1941, the animation won a live-action remake directed by Tim Burton. Going against the grain of most Disney-produced live-action remakes, this film isn’t a faithful adaptation in narrative terms. Tim Burton added his own distinct vision and style to the story, offering a darker take. Featuring the elephant Dumbo in photorealistic CGI, the film still has Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green and Alan Arkin in the cast.

mulan

The 1998 animation inspired a live-action film released in 2020, which brought a realistic approach focusing on the historical and cultural aspects of China. The live-action features a more serious narrative, focused on the protagonist’s self-discovery. Yifei Liu lives Mulan, and Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li and Jet Li round out the strong cast.

The Lady and the Tramp

The 1955 animation received a live-action/CGI hybrid remake released in 2019. The film recreates famous scenes from the original animation, bringing a more realistic approach with real animals.

Pinocchio

Peter Pan

The 1953 animation won a live-action adaptation in 2023, which reworks some elements of the original story that would be considered problematic by today’s audiences.

The little Mermaid

Tim Burton’s film, released in 2010, is a live-action adaptation that reinvents the story of Alice inspired by animation and the 1951 novel Lewis Carroll, bringing its own visual style and narrative approach. The film takes place 13 years after the original story, with 19-year-old Alice returning to the fantastic land she visited as a child. In 2016, a sequel titled “Alice Through the Looking Glass” was released.

The Lion King

The 1940 animation won a remake in 2019, which is actually not live-action, but photorealistic digital animation. However, the film is part of the series of realistic remakes of classic Disney animations.
