The coach said he understood the protests of the Vila Belmiro fans after the draw with Internacional
After Santos’ match against Internacional ended in a 1-1 draw, the fans present in Vila Belmiro staged a protest that lasted about 20 minutes. Phrases such as “Hey Falcão, Peixão out” and “If Tuesday doesn’t win, the stick will break” were part of the demonstration in the stands.
During the press conference, Odair Hellmann said he understood the allegations and stressed that they were only caused because the fans “want to see the results”. The coach also recalled the team’s recent elimination from the Copa do Brasil, after losing on penalties to Bahia.
Odair said the allegations stem largely from ‘misses’ but stressed that, during the match, the fans tried to push the team as much as possible. For him “it is necessary to have this recognition”.
– The climate of charge in the end is due to the lack of results, due to the defeat in the Copa do Brasil. We bonded at home today. If there are no results, there is a charge. From the first to the last minute, the fans supported us on the pitch. He whistled in no time. He felt the goal with us, in the end he protested because we didn’t win and we were coming from an elimination. We need this recognition,” he said.
However, the coach stated that, in his view, the team will not play badly, but rather “show the performance”. Odair said that “the cast knows what they have to do” and that only “victory brings calm”.
– The cast knows what we have to do. We must seek victory, it will bring calm, peace. We know, victory is essential for the regularity of the team. We know that any external pressure makes it more difficult, we have to work on trust, shielding, support. We have to face reality, rest. We come from very heavy sequences, there’s pressure. We must strengthen ourselves, seek performance, results. The result is the most important thing, but the performance we’re doing – he added -.
Emphasizing ‘always be honest all the time’, he also said that – for him – it is necessary to recognize the team’s performance in recent matches – citing the classic with Palmeiras and the duel against Audáx Italiano as examples.
– Let’s face it. I don’t want to make excuses. Let’s talk about reality, Santos didn’t play badly against Palmeiras, they didn’t play badly against Audax in the first half, everything turned upside down with the expulsion. We should have won the Bahia games, we had more ball possession, we didn’t play a bad game. We have to win. If Wednesday doesn’t play so well, it’s better to win. Then calm down. Does performance need to improve? Clear. But there are good games, good things. Is it difficult to come here and say this? Yes of course it is. We are not winning. I’m honest all the time – shot.
– When we didn’t make a good Paulista, I said. When we had a shoot, I spoke. We need results. We conceded goals with two minutes, the opponent was better not even two. He scored the goal from the rebound and was better until the 20th minute. We didn’t find each other, there’s little trust. But when we adapted, we got better in the game and got even. If there were to be a winner, it would be Santos. But this is not football. You have to win, you have to put the ball in, with a hand goal for 1 to 0 if the referee doesn’t give it – he has completed.
Santos went six games without a win. The last victory was in May, against Vasco, by 1 to 0. Now, on Tuesday (6), they will face Newell´s Old Boys, for the fifth round of the Copa Sudamericana. Odair sees victory as essential.
