Mexico’s ruling party will announce the 2024 presidential candidate on September 6

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s National Regeneration Movement (Morena) said on Sunday that its candidate for the 2024 presidential election would be announced on Sept. 6 after voting to pick a winner.

Five rounds will be held, said Alfonso Durazo, director of Morena in the state of Sonora, after a meeting of the leftist party’s leadership in Mexico City aimed at establishing rules for the internal dispute.

Morena has such a dominant lead in opinion polls for the June 2024 election that many analysts see the internal party race as the equivalent of a real presidential election.

All those who dispute the need for the party’s candidacy to leave public office to campaign for the election, Morena’s board of directors has decided.

That decision was widely expected and followed what party members said was a recommendation López Obrador made on Monday to keep his movement together.

The decision comes after months of pressure from the foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, for the Morena candidates to step away from office, arguing that it was the only way to ensure a level playing field in the dispute.

Ebrard is a favorite to secure the presidential nomination and said he would step down on Monday.
