The actress has in fact revealed (via Espinoff) That Paul WS Anderson had rewritten the script to give much more prominence to Michelle Rodriguez. The latter at the time had seen her popularity rating increase thanks to the film fight between girls (2000). It therefore seemed more interesting to produce make her the heroineand reduce Milla Jovovich’s role to that ofjust a helper.

I almost quit the movie. I was shooting something else and Paul had hired Michelle Rodriguez to play Rain. She had just come off the movie Girlfight and there was some excitement surrounding the Oscars. It was very trendy at the time and my popularity was already four years old, so Paul rewrote the script for her. He turned my character into “the girl” and Rain into “the boy”. She got all the action and became the new Alice, turning my Alice into a sidekick.

A long conversation with Paul WS Anderson

Luckily, Milla Jovovich didn’t give up. Seeing all the changes made and the return of her character, she asked to have “a good conversation” with the director, otherwise threatening to catch the first plane the next morning.

Paul came that afternoon and we sat for three hours going through the script page by page. He said, “What do you mean? Not much has changed.” And I said, “Okay, why don’t we start on page one?” And I pointed this out every time I felt my best scenes were taken away from me. This is how our relationship began.

The actress then won the case and the director then backtracked to achieve the result we know. Milla Jovovich became the heroine of resident Evil and brought the saga to the big screen during six films in total. Besides, Paul WS Anderson is his husband since 2009 and father of their three daughters born in 2007, 2015 and 2020.

For her part, Michelle Rodriguez has become an important face of the saga Fast & Furious, whose first film was released shortly before the horror film. And even though Rain dies at the end of Paul WS Anderson’s film, she appeared again alongside Milla Jovovich in 2012 with Resident Evil: Retribution.
