Courtney Hope has left Love, Glory and Beauty to join the cast of The Young and the Restless. In Los Angeles, the actor created the character of Sally, and now it is in Genoa that the hero develops… for better or for worse? Interview.
AlloCiné: Why did your producers move Sally from Los Angeles on “Love, Fame and Beauty” to Genoa on “The Young and the Restless”?
Courtney Hoppe: When I left Love, Fame and Beauty, I didn’t really know if I was going to join Les Feux de l’amour. I left it in the hands of fate! Finally, only a month later, one of the producers told me that they wanted my character to come to Genoa City! I jumped for joy because I love Sally and I love the show. Everyone was wonderful during this exchange.
How did you feel on the first day?
I was nervous, of course! But it was great: I got to work with Tracy Bregman and it was really cool because she was playing with Darlene Conley, the original Sally Spectra in Love, Glory and Beauty. He told me all the stories they lived together!
Also, I learned a lot in my four years on AGB, but it was nice to see his perspective through his experience in two series. Finally, it all happened in the Covid era, so I couldn’t interact with the other actors… we had to stay in the dressing rooms. I immersed myself in work.
How will you introduce Sally to a French audience?
Sally is hot and fiery! I find it very amusing. He grew up mostly with his grandmother and Aunt Sally. The latter was a model for him because he was a great stylist. Sally lives somewhere in his shadow…that’s why she sometimes tends to act impulsively! it causes him problems (laughs)
But he has a good heart. He just wants to make a name for himself and prove himself. Spectra is associated with something negative, so she always has to show who she is… and that always makes for interesting stories (laughs)
Sally wants to start over in Genoa City. He didn’t leave Los Angeles on good terms, and he wants to leave it. He wants to make a name for himself and he knows he can do it. It only takes one who believes in Him!
As soon as she arrives, Sally disagrees with Summer and Kyle. How will their relationship develop?
Sally knows who Summer is and wants to impress her and Kyle. But their professional conflict grows as Summer investigates her new rival… My character feels the script is repeating itself as she wants to move on. He finds himself in a dead end. But all this is nothing that he has not yet overcome! Sally just wished it hadn’t happened.
There is no flow between Sally and either. Phyllis … For what ?
In some ways, they are very similar! Sally and Summer’s rivalry also contributes to this conflict with Phyllis protecting her daughter as the apple of her eye. And Jack in the picture, it doesn’t help! Yeah, I think Sally and Phyllis are going straight to the wall (laughs)
Speaking of Jack…he’s quickly becoming one of Sally’s allies, and they already seem to like each other a lot. Will they be a couple?
He likes her to be down to earth and honest. Sally’s love life has seen a lot of turmoil, with men who have broken her. Jack represents the type of man he never had. She feels that he has her true interest. He supports her and appreciates her. I think Sally’s exes always had the idea in their heads even though they liked her. It’s not about Jack.
Sally didn’t expect it, but she’s in love, that’s for sure! They share something that others don’t necessarily understand. This makes him a bit like Jack and Sally in the face of adversity! They care about each other. Their love is genuine and they respect each other both at work and outside. So they might end up as a couple.
How did the meeting go? Peter Begman ?
He was big. He is one of the first to greet me and welcome me with open arms. He explained to me how the series works. It always wants to repeat and I love it! He wants to understand scenes and how to improve them. He’s great to work with, I found a friend in him right away when we were still in the middle of the pandemic with the commitment to stay away from each other.
And you, Courtney, can you be Sally’s friend?
I think so. He would be a fun and interesting person to hang out with! I tend to be positive and adventurous, while Sally does the same unintentionally because of her past. So we can complement each other like “Come on girl, we can do it! it will be OK!” (laughs)
