The institution climbed 30 places in the QS World survey; Unicamp is the second best Brazilian and eighth in Latin America
The University of São Paulo (USP) is the best higher education institution in Latin America and the 85th best in the world, according to the 20th edition of the university ranking QS world, one of the three most respected in the world. The list, which already refers to 2024, was published this Tuesday 27 by the publisher Quacquarelli Symonds, from the United Kingdom, which created the ranking. Compared to the last survey, USP has risen by 30 positions.
The survey analyzed 17.5 million scholarly works and considered the views of 240,000 teachers, students, employees and school owners. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked the best university in the world, a title it holds for the 12th consecutive year.
In second place is the University of Cambridge, which was already vice leader in the previous ranking, with 99.2 points. Third place went to Oxford University, which added 98.9 points and moved up one place.
USP scores 62.8 points out of a possible 100 (MIT scores 100) and is among the top 100 universities in the world for the first time this decade. In the previous ranking, from 2023, the university had 56.1 points and occupied the 115th position overall and the 3rd position in Latin America, losing to the University of Buenos Aires and the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Now, in Latin America, the Mexican school is in second place with 61.4 points and the Argentine school in third place, with 61 points.
In 2021, USP was 115th best, with 54.8 points, and in 2022, it was 121st best, with 55.9 points.
The second best Brazilian university is the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), in 220th place in the general ranking and 8th in Latin America, with 42.7 points. The third best Brazilian is the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), ranked 371st in the world and 12th in Latin America, with 29.9 points.
