If over time they calmed down and became great friends, they were still rivals for about twenty years, in the 1980s and 1990s. The formative years of action movies; Terminator versus Green Beret Rambo. To the point where we don’t have to be in too much of a state of mind to push each other’s boards of soap and if necessary a blanket to them.
“In the ’80s, Sly was ahead. I had to find a way to overtake him. Without Stallone, I doubt I would have had the motivation in the ’80s to make these kinds of films and work so hard.” Arnold Schwarzenegger comments in his Netflix documentary, Arnold. The rivalry is largely maintained also by the media, which will not miss, to the point that the two stars “I can’t stand being in the same room.”
It’s against this background that our favorite Arnie spoke during a recent panel held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a museum dedicated to the history, science and impact of the film industry located in Los Angeles.
Intervention before screening terminatorThe actor explained that this rivalry made him want a different Terminator 2 movie. “The first reason Terminator was such a big hit was James Cameron. James is a brilliant screenwriter. He had this brilliant idea, even though I was skeptical at first. He said, ‘I want you to be good. Terminator”.
There I replied: “good terminator” what do you mean? I killed 68 people in the previous film. I got to kill 150 in the second! They cut their throats, come down with a cannon, we ride in a car. Drive him over!”
Obviously, Cameron already had a very precise idea of what he wanted his character to be like in this upcoming sequel. “Then he said, ‘Arnold, stop!’ You are a really sick boy. I’m basically going to make sure you don’t kill a single person in Terminator 2″. One person? Or at least dump a few bodies.”
Cameron was right to stick to his guns, allowing his sequel to offer anthology moments, e.g. Mini-gun sequence Where the Terminator takes care of a police force laying siege to the Skynet offices without causing a single casualty.
