The association recalled that an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in February, which led to the closure of the Chinese market, resumed a month later, had an impact on activity in the first half.

Despite this, the top importer of Brazilian beef in the first six months was China, with purchases of 512,306 tons, generating revenues of $2.6 billion, according to Abiec, which counts major producers and exporters among its members, such as JBS, Marfrig and Minerva.

Shipments to China were down 5% in volume and 29% in revenue.

Brazil’s second largest market in the first half was the United States, with a total volume of 71,398 tons (-8.4%) and revenues of $428.6 million (-18.9%), considering fresh and processed meats .

“For fresh meat alone, volumes (in the US) total 49,545 tons with revenue…Today, Brazil is the third largest supplier of fresh meat to the US market, consolidating Brazilian Protein as a large partner in the the country’s meat processing industry,” the association said.

Exports to the European Union, which buys cuts with high added value, increased by 7.7% in the first half, to 39,330 tons, for a total of 287.2 million dollars (+2.1%) in the first semester, said the ABIEC.

“It was the largest volume exported to the European bloc since 2008, when Traces Farms became mandatory, which reduced qualified holdings and cut Brazil’s total fresh beef export to the EU by less than half,” he said. stated.

Shipments to Chile grew by 25.1%, to 44.5 thousand tons, generating revenues of 217.7 million dollars (+18.8%).

The ABIEC also highlighted the growth of exports to Russia, which increased by 44.7% in the first semester, to 23,556 tons.

The association also cited good prospects with recent fresh meat openings in Mexico and Canada.
