Tom Cruise joins strike, ‘Mission: Impossible’ filming halted

After Tom Cruise joined the actors’ strike in Hollywood, the filming of “Mission: Impossible – Reckoning Part Two” was stopped. The news comes at a critical time, after all, the first part of the feature film hit theaters this week.

As a result, the facilities at Longcross Film Studios in London, where filming took place, have been emptied and it is possible that the premiere, scheduled for June 2024, will be postponed.

The strike of 160,000 unionized actors in the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) was announced last Thursday (13). With this, the professionals increase the pressure on the studios, as the screenwriters have been on strike since the beginning of May.

We are therefore living in a historic moment: it is the first time in 63 years that the actors’ and writers’ unions have gone on strike at the same time. The last time this happened was in 1960.

Among the demands of the actors are the increase of remuneration for royalties from streaming services and the use of images made by artificial intelligence without consent or compensation to them.

Strikes cost billions

It is estimated that the damage could be in the billions. After all, in the first 24 hours of the writers’ strike, the industry lost an estimated $10 billion, according to the Unilad website. Today they expect the state of Los Angeles alone to lose $30 million a day.

Faced with this catastrophic scenario, the shares of some giants have already started to fall. According to TheWrap, the fall looked like this:

However, the portal also highlighted that the value of the shares remains high compared to the same period last year, with the exception of Disney and Paramount.

Unfortunately some productions that until now had not been affected by this have been interrupted. This was the case, for example, with “Stranger Things”, “The Handmaid’s Tale”, among others.
