Superman has several extraordinary powers, but one in particular comes with ultimate capabilities at a high cost.
As everyone knows, Superman’s powers come from his exposure to our yellow sun. And while this concept is extended to the influence of gravity on his anatomy, most of his stories over the decades treat Kal-El as a “living battery” that uses solar radiation. And there is a Man of Steel ultimate power that is based on this logic, but that is never used due to the high cost it imposes.

- Superman finds his way home thanks to the most underrated power
Superman’s powers fluctuate as the hero is exposed to solar radiation. In several stories, this aspect is often used as a weakness, with villains blocking out the sun to undermine the Man of Steel’s strength. The so-called Sun-Dipping (or “Solar Dip”, in the free translation), is a supreme power that can be considered the oporto in this logic, as a direct contact would leave Clark Kent with all the capabilities of him at his peak.
But why doesn’t Superman use Sun-Dipping regularly? Well, for several reasons, but mostly because it makes your powers harder to control; and in the long run, it could become very dangerous for the healthy functioning of your body.

In justice league #25, from 2019, we see an example of how Sun-Dipping can be an impractical option in your fights. In the issue, Superman is only able to win after Batman manages to align a line of newly created suns so the Man of Steel can quickly access them and be superpowered.
But imagine having to do something similar every time Superman needed to ramp up his powers to the pinnacle? Even with super speed, this wouldn’t be very functional in your fights. Also, the Man of Steel himself believes in his humanity much more than being superpowered by the Sun to solve all of his problems.

And there’s another fundamental danger that Sun-Dipping poses to the Man of Steel: The practice can overwhelm Superman’s powers, ultimately killing him. This is exactly the plot of Big star: Supermanin which Kal-El, after a great exposure to the sun, sees his cells become cancerous and deadly, also due to his extraordinary anatomy.
Ultimately, then, Sun-Dipping can be considered his ultimate power, which can give Superman the pinnacle of his abilities; but it can also make you sketchy, careless, and even lazy, with the long-term cost even being your own life.
