Tajani calls for “global action” to resolve the migration crisis

Rome will host a summit on the subject next Sunday

The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, highlighted this Saturday (22) the need for “global action” to resolve the migration crisis.

“For months now, Italy has turned its attention to the issue of migration, making it not only a national issue, but a European and international one. Global action by Europe and other countries is needed to try to tackle the root of the problem”, commented the Italian chancellor at an event in Paestum.

Just over 210 migrants have landed in the past few hours in Lampedusa, Italy, after five small boats were intercepted by the Coast Guard. The boats departed from Sfax, Tunisia, and had people on board from different African countries, such as Sudan, Togo, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

“The problem is called climate change, poverty, terrorism, civil wars, that is, a combination of causes. If we also add the wheat crisis, we risk getting worse”, added Tajani.

Tomorrow (23) the city of Rome will host an international summit on the migration crisis with various heads of state and government.

Italy is the main gateway for forced migrants across the Mediterranean to the European continent and, according to the Interior Ministry, has already received more than 70,000 in 2023, an increase of 134.5% compared to the same period last year. .
