Is it worth checking out?

A novel published in 2019 Red, white and royal blue – strangely translated as my dear prince in French – established itself as one of the biggest hits in youth literature.

During the 2016 US presidential election, author Casey McQuiston had the idea to imagine an impossible love story between the crown prince of England and the son of… the president of the United States. A must-see romance that forces two protagonists to live out their passion by day.

The film adaptation is finally arriving. Well aware of its fantasy-worthy postulate – and we are swimming in pure fantasy – the film is primarily entertainment, aimed at young viewers, with plenty of comedy moments.

If the first quarter of an hour can raise any eyebrows, we finally get into this game of intrigue that touches on the romantic comedy classic. The two actors, who look like models from a Calvin Klein ad, make an endearing and ultimately disturbing duo.

Red, white and royal blue is a real-life film of its time that puts the use of social networks at the center of the story – the two characters initially maintain an epistolary relationship. The direction also integrates these tools on screen in an ingenious way. Modernity also passes through its subject: a homosexual romance between two public figures.

Beyond its apparent levity, the film deals, especially in its final part, with the homophobia of the entire system, especially the monarchy, which, shunned by all protocols, leaves little room for difference. One of the main scenes of the feature film perfectly illustrates this question.

Without much pretension, Red, White and Royal Blue is a romance of the sun, funny, sexy and entertaining, which does not forget the relevance. Something to please fans of the original book.

Red, White and Royal Blue is available on Prime Video.
