Nico, Trapped on the High Seas, Chess and Death, Destined to Die, Savage Justice… Several films between the late 80’s and early 90’s established the man as a big name in action cinema. A man we see even then as a possible successor to the icons of Stallone and Schwarzenegger… but what has become of Steven Seagal?
After a successful run of several years, things are going badly for Steven Seagal. The feature film Terrain Mined, his only achievement, was a failure, and High Speed Trap, the sequel to one of his biggest successes, did not really meet with his audience.
Steven Seagal turns in some muscular efforts, especially in Toxic Menace, Final Decision, White Shadow (which makes him make an incredible decision) or even High Risk Trap, but he struggles to find the aura he gave off in his debut. Only Off limits, which was released in theaters in 2001 and which saw him answer to DMX, allowed him to find a way to success, the film grossed more than 80 million dollars worldwide.
However, it is impossible to deny this sad evidence: since the early 2000s, Steven Seagal’s career as an actor has been limited to action films without real ambition, often intended for the video market and which mostly flirt with the cute but dangerous Nanardesque zone.
Steven Seagal hit a high point in 2010’s Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, and his career could have really taken off again when he came close to starring in the Expendables saga. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the long-awaited “hype” boost as an actor, instead his name has appeared in columns on the fringes of the Hollywood industry in recent years.
Considered a “terrible man” by the actor who inspired him for the film, Steven Seagal, who naturalized as a Russian and Serbian in 2016, was recently honored by Vladimir Putin. Involved in Tibetan Buddhism and philanthropy, star of a reality TV show Lowman And a blues singer in his spare time, the elusive character, now 71, hasn’t appeared on screen since 2019’s action film Beyond The Law. Is Seagal’s Artistic Retirement Expected?
