‘It’s so ugly’: After almost making ‘Black Widow’, this filmmaker takes on Marvel today

Earlier this year, the Oscar-winning director took aim at Marvel movies. A few months later again: it’s the filmmaker’s turn to deal with a superhero studio! at the microphone of TheFilmStageArgentina’s Lucrecia Martel, who was one of the women who fought to get Black Widow signed, criticized a very specific aspect of blockbusters.

“A lot of female directors were approached to make Black Widow”Lucrezia Martel remembers first. “I never imagined that Marvel would call me to be part of such an ensemble. I never thought it would be possible. I would love to do a movie with them, but I had to do something personal, something. What I wanted to see in this world.”

“Some of the Marvel movies are available on airplanes, so I’ve seen a few”continues the 56-year-old director. “I found that the sound quality in these films was very poor… (…) The sounds associated with the special effects are very ugly. And the use of music in these films is terrible.”

This isn’t the first time Lucrezia Martelli has taken on Marvel. The one to whom we owe a full-length film to Zama already did this during his missed date with Black Widow. In particular, he said on the microphone of The Pioneer that “Companies are interested in female filmmakers, but still believe that action scenes should be directed by men.

Black Widow, which hit theaters in 2018, was directed by Australian Kate Shortland. The feature film, directed by Scarlett Johansson, who fans won’t see again in the MCU, grossed nearly $380 million worldwide.
