Find out how the SP government installed an app on the cell phones of teachers and students without permission

Estado says there was a “failure during a test sponsored by the technical area of the folder on specific Seduc devices”

Teachers and students from the São Paulo state educational network last week took to social media to complain that the “Minha Escola SP” application was installed on their private mobile phones without them being authorized to download it.

The Union of Official Teachers of Education of the State of SP (APEOESP) also reported on its official page that it had received complaints from several educators about the incident. “The State of São Paulo”.

To the Earththe State Department of Education (Seduc-SP) confirmed the installation, but claimed this was due to a “technical problem” during a test promoted by the technical area of the file and that the case is investigated.

“What does it mean to install an application on my private cell phone, without my permission, SP State Department of Education? The ‘My School SP’ app has been installed on the cell phones of almost every teacher and student in our region, this is an affront!”, the regional vice president of Upes (União Paulista dos Estudantes Secundaristas) in Alto Tietê posted on Twitter.

The application My SP school, as announced by the Secretary of Education of the State of São Paulo, is aimed at state school students and their supervisors. Its goal, according to the folder, is to increase student engagement with the school and increase family participation in student school life.

The application has features such as: school contact information; consultation of the registration history; consult the bulletin; simplified view of notes; Student card; evaluation of school meals and re-registration.

According to the experts consulted by the Stadium, the Department of Education has an agreement with Google for the use of educational platforms, which could lead to a mass installation of this type. To the newspaper, computer technicians argue that there is no way a mass installation can take place without it being done by the mobile phone manufacturer or through Google. However, for this, data on teachers and students must be provided by the state.

Also according to the newspaper article, when using the Google Workspace for Education platform, the secretariat can choose or not to manage and control employee access. It is possible, according to information available from Google, “to apply encryption and limit the features of mobile devices, such as notifications on the lock screen, manage apps on Android, iPhone and iPad devices and permanently delete data from devices”.

In a note to Earththe Secretary of Education of the State of São Paulo says that it has initiated an administrative procedure to investigate all the circumstances related to the involuntary installation of the Minha Escola application.

“The failure occurred during a test carried out by Pasta’s technical area on specific Seduc devices. As soon as the error that led to the installation of the app on devices connected to institutional Google accounts was identified, the reversal was triggered with sending application cancellation requests,” the folder reports.

The Department of Education also points out that the user can also delete the app themselves if they prefer. “Seduc regrets what happened and reiterates that the appropriate measures are being taken”, he adds.
