Having trouble hearing dialogue while streaming? You’re not the only one

Have you ever had to turn up the volume to listen to the dialogue of a streaming series or movie, but then turn it down again due to sound crashing into music or a fight scene? If so, you’re not the only one. However, the problem does not concern the quality of the sound mix, but rather the reproduction of works created for the cinema on ordinary televisions or even on the very format of today’s televisions and laptops.

It’s no news that streaming sound resources aren’t the best. It is common to increase and decrease the sound as you browse the works in a catalog or even between different platforms.

According to an article by The New York Timesabout 50% of young Americans have resorted to closed captioning because of this problem.

However, this doesn’t have much to do with the quality of the audio mix itself, but is influenced by sound performance criteria, online regulations and even the design of the playback devices.

Roots of the problem

One of the main causes of fluctuating sound between operas and streaming is that unlike open TV or cable, online broadcasting has no rules on minimum or maximum sound limits.

That is, if you’re watching an HBO Max series and then playing an Amazon Prime Video series, you’ll likely need to resort to the remote.

Another reason has to do with viewers’ new consumption habits. For example, large film productions made specifically for theaters mix sound with high-quality speakers in the theaters in mind. However, a person watching the same work on TV at home will have a different result.

The design trend of televisions, mobile phones and laptops also influences the sound quality. This is because many TV manufacturers are decreasing the thickness of the screens and, consequently, the speakers are moved to more aesthetic and less functional positions, usually away from the user’s ears.
